“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Today we pause to remember the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But, let us also remember others who took a stand by sitting down. Rosa Parks. Medgar Evers. Even Malcolm X was integral to the Civil Rights movement. So, today, take the hand of another human being and remember that we are all created in the image of God, deserving of each others’ civility—judging by the content of character, not the color of one’s skin.
Blessings.

Some great (and often overlooked) quotes from Dr. King.
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
“We must use time creatively.”
“The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important.”
Remember Dr. King, Jr.’s approach to civil rights for ALL people, regardless of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, or social status. Let’s honor his memory, but also that of his wife, Coretta Scott King, who fought valiantly on behalf of the LGBTQ community.
The message of the Kings is timely in light of the struggle for equality over Proposition 8 in California.
“Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood”, King stated. “This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group.” — Coretta Scott King
